  • South Indian Traditional wear

    Festive and traditional Indian attire is encouraged as this is a traditional ceremony.

    The conventional South Indian female attire at weddings is a Kanjeevaram Silk Saree. However you can also wear your choice of festive Saree or other ethnic outfit like Lehenga, Salwar Kameez, Sharara/Gharara, Anarkali etc.

    You also have the option to wear a dress. We request that the attire be modest and that shoulders and knees be covered while inside the temple.

    The traditional male South Indian wedding attire is a veshti ( white or cream fabric draped around the waist) and pattu chattai (silk shirt).

    Alternatively, you may wear Indian festive attire like Kurta Pajama with a Nehru jacket, a formal Bandhgala/ Jodhpuri Suit or a western suit.

    For those located in Houston, the Mahatma Gandhi District on Hillcroft and Harwin has a large selection of Indian clothing stores.

    Local favorites include Nalli Silks (5901 Hillcroft St Ste B2, Houston, TX 77036) for Sarees and Rose Boutique (5901 Hillcroft St Ste a/4, Houston, TX 77036) for male and female festive clothing ( lehengas, salwar kameezes etc ) and accessories.

    Men

    • Veshti and Shirt: Veshti, also known as dhoti, is a traditional garment worn around the waist, typically made of cotton or silk. It is paired with a shirt, often in contrasting or complementary colors. The shirt can be plain or embellished, depending on the occasion.

    • Kurta and Pajama: The kurta is a loose-fitting garment that can be short or long, paired with pajamas (loose trousers). This attire is lightweight and allows for ease of movement, making it suitable for both formal and informal ceremonies within the wedding celebrations.

    • Sherwani: A sherwani is a long coat-like garment that is tailored with intricate embroidery, or zari work. Sherwanis are typically paired with churidar pants (fitted trousers) and often accessorized with a dupatta (scarf) draped over one shoulder.

    Women

    • Saree: Wearing a saree represents grace and elegance for women at South Indian weddings. Typically made from luxurious silk fabrics, sarees are adorned with intricate traditional motifs, zari work, and rich borders. The draping style varies by region, with styles like Nivi, Kaccha, or Seedha Pallu being popular choices. Sarees in vibrant colors such as red, green, blue, and gold are favored for their auspiciousness and beauty.

    • Lehenga: It consists of a long skirt (lehenga), a blouse (choli), and a scarf (dupatta). These come in a variety of styles, colors, and fabrics, including silk, georgette, or velvet, adorned with intricate embroidery, stone work, or embellishments.

    • Salwar Kameez: The outfit consists of a long tunic (kameez), paired with loose-fitting trousers (salwar) and a scarf (dupatta). Salwar Kameez sets come in various fabrics such as cotton, silk, or chiffon, with embellishments like embroidery, mirror work, or sequins that add a touch of elegance.

  • Wedding

    The wedding ceremony will begin promptly at 8:30am in the Foyer of the Kalyana Mandapam. We suggest arriving by 8:15am to allow time for parking.

    We will have pre-ceremony events beginning at 7am at the Ganesha Temple. Do join if you wish to participate in the Mappillai Azhappu (groom’s procession)!

    Reception

    Cocktail Hour will begin at 6pm, followed by speeches and performances from 7pm-8pm. Dinner and dancing will commence at 8pm.
